Mining and transport conglomerate Grupo Mexico reported a 17% jump in first-quarter net profit on Friday, primarily driven by higher metal prices.Net profit rose to $1.09 billion, well above the $816 million estimate from analysts polled by LSEG, as copper and silver prices surged and the miner trimmed production costs.Copper production and sales were nearly flat from the year-ago quarter, with output from US unit Asarco slipping.Prices for the red metal, however, rose 18% from a year ago while silver leaped some 38%.That brought revenue for Grupo Mexico, which also operates sprawling freight railroads and an infrastructure division, up 10% to $4.20 billion in the quarter.The company also touted trimmed production costs for copper and byproducts as adding an earnings boost.Grupo Mexico, controlled by billionaire German Larrea, is one of the world’s largest copper producers with mines in Peru, the United States, Spain and its home base of Mexico.The company could be at risk from the trade war breaking out between the United States and China, with copper prices slumping since the end of the first quarter.Copper was exempted from sweeping tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump in March, though analysts say import taxes on the metal could be coming as well.Grupo Mexico did note that tariffs and trade policies could have an impact on its results.(By Natalia Siniawski and Kylie Madry; Editing by Bill Berkrot)

Grupo Mexico posts 17% profit jump on higher metals prices

Chile’s Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, on Friday posted a 53% decrease in pre-tax profit, reaching $213 million for the first three months of the year.The state-owned miner said its own output totaled 296,000 metric tons, up 0.3% from the same period last year.This increase was achieved despite various challenges in the first quarter, including the regional rainy season and a nationwide blackout in February, which reduced refined copper production by 10,000 tons, the company said in a statement.Codelco said the company faced rising costs due to planned mine and plant maintenance, as well as higher operating costs for equipment leasing which where partially offset by lower input prices, including power and fuel.The miner is targeting copper production between 1.37 million tons and 1.4 million tons this year, as it aims to boost output for the second year in a row after slipping to a quarter-century low in 2023.(By Fabian Andres Cambero and Natalia Siniawski; Editing by Kylie Madry)

Codelco’s pre-tax profit falls 53% in first quarter

Brazilian steelmaker Usiminas on Thursday delivered first quarter results above market expectations but flagged that the second half of the year faced challenges amid high interest rates and trade uncertainties.Companies around the world have been bracing for the potential impact of US President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, which have sparked a trade war and led business to warn of growing uncertainty and concerns about the global economy.“For the second half of 2025, we foresee a challenging and uncertain scenario,” the Brazilian firm said in a securities filing after reporting its quarterly results.“That is mainly due to high volumes of steel imports under conditions of unfair competition, the impact on domestic consumption caused by the current high interest rates, and uncertainties in international trade.”Steelmakers in Latin America’s largest economy have long complained of an unfair playing field, saying that China floods the market with cheap material. Usiminas again called on the government to do more to control those imports.The Brazilian firm reported a net profit of 337 million reais ($59.08 million) for the January-March period, up 845% year-on-year, beating the 225.02 million expected by analysts in an LSEG poll.Steel sales were up 5% on a yearly basis to 1.09 million metric tons while iron ore sales jumped 13% to 2.11 million tons. Brazil’s Usiminas posts positive results but warns of uncertainty ahead

The International Nickel Study Group (INSG) on Thursday forecast a nickel market surplus of 198,000 metric tons for 2025.The group also forecast global primary nickel usage at 3.537 million tons this year and global primary nickel production at 3.735 million tons.The market balance in 2023 was a surplus of 170,000 tons, rising to 179,000 tons in 2024, the Lisbon-based group said.World primary nickel production was 3.363 million tons in 2023 and 3.526 million tons in 2024, with primary usage at 3.193 million tons and 3.347 million tons respectively. Nickel market forecast to be in 198,000 ton surplus in 2025, says INSG

Canadian miner Teck Resources on Thursday reported first-quarter results that beat expectations due to higher commodity prices and copper sales volumes.The company reported adjusted earnings per share from continuing operations of C$0.60, above expectations of C$0.32, according to data compiled by LSEG.“Our profitability improved significantly … primarily as a result of higher base metal prices, increased copper and zinc in concentrate sales volumes, and the positive impact of a weaker Canadian dollar on our business,” Teck said in a statement.Teck’s first-quarter copper sales volumes rose to 106,200 tonnes, an increase of 11% year-on-year.Revenue rose to C$2.29 billion ($1.65 billion) from C$1.62 billion last year, beating expectations.Teck also maintained its forecast for 2025.In February, the company had said that US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian imports will not have any material impact on its business.($1 = 1.3867 Canadian dollars)(By Kanjyik Ghosh; Editing by Mrigank Dhaniwala)

Teck Q1 results beat estimates on higher commodity prices, copper sales

April 24 (Reuters) - Copper miner Freeport-McMoRan reported a first-quarter profit on Thursday that slightly beat Wall Street's expectations but said tariffs proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump could increase the cost of materials needed for its U.S. mines by about 5%.Shares of the Arizona-based company, which operates across the Americas, Indonesia and Europe, were 5.2% higher in midday trading.Trump's sweeping tariffs on most U.S. imports and a rapidly intensifying trade war with China have sparked uncertainty across the mining industry and left companies scrambling to look for alternative supply chains. The U.S. president in February had also ordered a probe into potential new tariffs on copper imports to rebuild U.S. production of the metal critical to electric vehicles, military hardware, power grid and many consumer goods.Freeport has yet to directly comment on Trump's tariff plans, but both Chairman Richard Adkerson and CEO Kathleen Quirk repeated their concerns on Thursday about how broad levies could affect the global economy."Government policy and tariffs are dominating financial markets, yet at Freeport we are focused on the basics to drive long term value," Adkerson told investors on an earnings conference call.Freeport's net income attributable to common shareholders fell to $352 million, or 24 cents per share, for the three months ended March 31, from $473 million, or 32 cents per share, a year earlier, as production in Indonesia fell sharply due to maintenance.By that measure, analysts had expected earnings of 23.8 cents per share, according to IBES data from LSEG.Phoenix-based Freeport operates one of two U.S. copper smelters and provides roughly 70% of the country's refined copper production. Freeport-McMoRan profit slightly beats, flags higher costs amid tariffs

Swedish miner Boliden reported first-quarter earnings above market estimates on Wednesday, helped by higher metal prices and stronger US dollar, but warned that trend had reversed since the start of April.The company, which operates seven mines and five smelters in the Nordic region, Ireland and Portugal, said its operating profit nearly doubled to 3.06 billion Swedish crowns ($319.3 million) in the quarter. Boliden gains from higher metal prices, says it can handle tougher times

Ghana and Gold Fields have reached an agreement on a transitional plan for Damang mine, the West African country’s presidency said on Wednesday.Last week, Ghana assumed operational control of the mine after it rejected an application from the South African company to renew its lease, breaking a tradition of automatically renewing licenses.The presidency said in a statement that a new 12-month mining lease will be issued to a Gold Fields’ subsidiary pending parliamentary ratification in May.During the transition period, Gold Fields will resume open-pit mining and conduct feasibility studies to establish Damang’s reserves and mine life, the presidency said in a statement.Damang is the smaller of Gold Fields’ two operations in Ghana, Africa’s leading gold producer.Representatives from Ghana’s government and the company will continue to supervise the processing of existing stockpiles, the presidency added.“This is far from ideal, but we take it like that,” said a source in the company, who was not authorized to speak on the matter.“They gave us assurance that this won’t be a trend and it won’t affect Tarkwa mine’s lease, and we are advised to apply even now so that Gold Fields can have certainty,” the source added.Both parties also agreed to advance discussions on the renewal of the lease for the Tarkwa mine, due in 2027.The source said Gold Fields’ management was more concerned about Tarkwa’s lease because of its higher volumes.(By Maxwell Akalaare Adombila and Anait Miridzhanian; Editing by Bate Felix)

Ghana and Gold Fields reach transitional deal on Damang mine

Prices of battery materials lithium and cobalt assessed by consultancy Benchmark Minerals Intelligence (BMI) will be used for contracts launched by Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) in June, BMI told Reuters.For BMI, a price reporting agency (PRA), this is an important step in having its prices used to settle derivative contracts traded on exchanges, an area dominated by information firms Fastmarkets and S&amp;P Global Commodity Insights.An agreement between BMI and ICE signed earlier this year covers prices of lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide, spodumene concentrate and cobalt hydroxide, BMI said. Spodumene concentrate contains lithium.Battery metals market faces perfect storm — analysts They are all crucial materials for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, a key plank of the global energy transition.BMI said the contracts will be cash-settled and listed in London on ICE Futures Europe. Benchmark Minerals and ICE team up for battery material futures

Chile’s government said it is moving forward with a simplified process to award lithium contracts in three salt flats, the mining ministry said on Tuesday.The agency stated that it has accepted applications from Eramet in the Agua Amarga salt flat; from Eramet, Quiborax, and state-copper giant Codelco, for the Ascotan salt flat; and from the Caliche Kairos consortium for the Coipasa salt flat.Leftist President Gabriel Boric introduced a plan to boost state control over lithium, a light metal key in electrical vehicles and the energy transition, in 2023 and form public-private partnerships to expand the industry.The plan included a state-controlled joint venture between Codelco and SQM, the country’s largest lithium miner, as well as opening up other salt flats for development.On Tuesday, the mining ministry said that once indigenous consultations in the salt flats and other conditions for the CEOL, a special permit to mine lithium, are established, the contract will be signed if applicants agree.“Otherwise, public bidding processes will be initiated, as was the case with the Ollague salt flat in the Antofagasta region, and Piedra Parada and Laguna Verde in the Atacama region,” the statement said.To qualify for the expedited process, parties had to demonstrate a certain level of ownership of the mining concession, financial capacity and experience in mining or the value chain.The statement also noted that a dialogue for indigenous consultation to modify a CEOL at the Maricunga salt flat on behalf of Codelco had concluded.“All that remains is the publication of the closing resolution, which will include the 11 agreements reached with the six communities that participated in the process,” the statement said.(By Fabian Andres Cambero; Editing by Alexander Villegas and Alistair Bell)

Chile moves forward with lithium projects in three salt flats

United States Antimony Corp said on Monday it has restarted operations at its Madero smelter plant in Mexico, over a year after the critical mineral miner stopped activities in Latin America.In December last year, China banned exports to the US of the critical minerals gallium, germanium and antimony, amid an escalating trade and tech war between the world’s two biggest economies.China produced almost half of the global supply of antimony in 2023 and prices of the mineral have soared in the wake of its heavy export restrictions, disrupting global supply chains.US President Donald Trump has also been pushing to boost domestic production of critical minerals such as antimony, to offset China’s near total control of the sector.The mineral is widely used in ammunition, infrared missiles, nuclear weapons and night-vision goggles, as well as in batteries and photovoltaic equipment.Last year in March, United States Antimony had said it would discontinue all operational activities in Latin America and sell its subsidiary in Mexico.The decision was made following a review of the financial performance of those assets, the unit’s negative cash flow and low antimony prices.The company said it has begun processing the first antimony ore acquired from international sources at the Madero smelter.
