'The perfect storm' - Coppernico Metals' Ivan Bebek on spiking copper demand, constrained supply teaser image

(Kitco News) - Ivan Bebek, chair and CEO of Coppernico Metals, is feeling the pull from copper.

In August Bebek spoke to Kitco Mining.

Copernico Metals (TSX:COPR) is a copper exploration company. Its goal is to make top-tier copper discoveries, and Bebek believes the company’s Sombrero project in Peru has the potential to be a world-class asset.

“When we saw this opportunity—scale and potential for grade—that drew us in,” said Bebek.

In the company's deck, Coppernico says that Sombrero is a direct analogue to Las Bambas, the 11th largest copper producing mine in the world. The project is located in a region known for significant copper production and shows geological similarities to large mines nearby. The copper-gold Sombrero project is a land package of approximately 103,000 hectares located in the north-western margins of the world-class Andahuaylas-Yauri belt in Peru that hosts Las Bambas, Haquira, Los Chancas, Cotabambas, Constancia, Antapaccay, and Tintaya deposits.

The company has a strong team with experienced mining professionals. Bebek used to head Cayden Resources, which sold to Agnico Eagle for C$205M. In July Coppernico added two executives from BHP to the board to provide technical depth to advancing the project.

The primary catalyst for Copernico is ongoing discovery drilling at Sombrero. The company is exploring an undrilled area with the potential for a major copper discovery, with results expected in late September. The company is well-funded with working capital into 2026.

Bebek likes the copper story. The metal faces rising demand and constrained supply.

"I'm a gold bug at heart, and I love silver, but I'm a copper bull,” said Bebek. “I see the obvious need for electrification. It's a metal that takes a long time to bring online when you find it. It's…the perfect storm in the copper space.”
